D S Senanayake College Presents LIGHTS OFF!

The MUN association of D S Senanayake College, organised a short film festival called LIGHTS OFF. The main theme of the program was Sustainaibility. The program took place on the 29th Feb at the Global Towers Hotel in Colombo. Rehan Fernando, Sahan Hattotuwa and the COMUN's Head Of Environment Awareness Program, Dilly Karunarathne were the distinguish guest and judges of the Program.

Light Off is a very unique and dynamic program which was organised by the MUNA of D S Senanayake college.  There were a total of six schools who took part in the program. The challenge presented to the participants was to create a two minute video about saving energy and sustainability, through the time period of the video, the participants have to give clear message.

As judges of the program, we were pretty impressed with all the videos presented during the program, all the videos gave a clear cut message that is "WE ARE DESTROYING THE EARTH AND WE MUST ACT NOW".  The content of the videos were really good, some videos were taken at school and also at home. These videos concentrate on how we can save energy just by acting with a little bit of responsibility. We were astonished about the creativity behind the videos, some blew our minds away.

Talking about the program itself,  the members of the organizing team was able to spread the message about sustainability and saving energy. They also stated that they hoping to create more awareness about this message that this is only a stepping stone towards a great journey ahead. They also hoping to LIGHTS OFF onto the national level by having a time period where all of Sri Lanka would switch off their Electricity. Well they certainly have big dreams, we only HOPE that it the dream would be an reality.

Another important event also happened during the program, for one of their's entertainment items a Student of the college did a presentation on Martial Arts which was really exciting to see. The ideas behind the item, was to spread the message saying that, for us to exercise we don't need any expensive and huge equipment which would waste a lot of energy, we can simply practice martial arts and get better results. Thus it shows how the organizers have planned even the simplest small thing,  just to spread the message.

At the end of the day, we as judges have to select a winner, the team that was able to spread the message in the most effective way. Thus the results were
                             1st Place HFC team 1
                             2nd Place Vishaka Vidyala

As a closing remark, the program was really good, and hat off to the organizing team pulling a amazing event and giving a clear cut messsage.

It should be noted that this program was organised as a part of the D S Senanayake College project for the Green Life Project Of COMUN 2012.
